W.E . are forever

Between a bad case of food poisoning and aimlessly shopping online while blaming it all on the crazy sale season, I found myself with way too much of free time. So, I decided to make the most of it and do everything I love - Eat, sleep and binge watch every TV show and movies I had missed out on.
One of the movies that completely transfixed me was W.E. directed by Madonna. Its based on a true love story between King Edward and a not-so-common American girl Wallis. Now I didn't know their actual story before watching and I thought it would have a very very sad ending just like other great love stories. But what makes this love story great is the fact that the king gave up his throne for this girl, because as a king he couldn't marry a commoner.

No wonder this lady became the most hated woman not only in Britain, but in the whole world. She and the king, had to live in exile in France for the rest of their lives. Okay, exile here means living in a fancy cottage in Paris but that does not make up for the grief they had to go through for not being allowed in their own country.

The movie captures their romance in a spell bounding way. The costumes and the sets are bigger than life. I guess I should have expected that knowing this was Madonna's movie. Though the screen play could have been a little stronger, but the story made up for it.

This American girl changed the destiny of Britain and its aristocracy forever. If King Edward hadn't given up his thrown for Wallis, Queen Elizabeth wouldn't have been the Queen, Prince Charles wouldn't be a Prince and may be Diana would have still been alive.

Prince William is applauded for marrying the love of his life even though she was not a Royal but then there is King Edward who was shammed for leaving the thrown because he wanted to do the same exact thing. I guess it just shows how time has changed. But I couldn't help but wonder how different things would have been if Edward were allowed to keep his thrown.

  3. This was indeed one of those rare occasions where love literally changed the course of history. In this age where it's age hatred and war trying to change history this is a welcome change.
