Growing Up

By Wednesday, May 22, 2013

Last month my 19 year old sister called me up and asked me, “ Main bade hokar kya banungi ?” (What will I be when I grow up). I was baffled, shocked and couldn’t stop laughing when I realized she was actually dead serious. I mean shouldn’t a 19 year old college going student know by now what they want to when they ‘grow up’?

I couldn’t help but wonder if she had a valid question and it was not so stupid as it sounded. Most of us have no idea what we really want to be and we are basically growing up every day. Each and every day we get more wiser and more mature ( Well, atleast some do !). And every single day we are actually fighting with the same question – What do you want to be when you grow up ?

It used to be such an easy question when we were 9 years old, we could be anything we wanted to be – be it an astronaut, an army officer, a chef, mountaineer or even a president. But as we grew up, the choices came shrinking down and reality hit us. And we understood the value of money. We realized our passions don’t actually pay, and the actually paying jobs are far from being passionate about.

But only a few realise , we can start anyday and begin fresh or keep discovering what we are and what we want to be when we grow up. Because everyday we ‘grow up’ a little, and I am sure there will be a day when I realize what I want to be when I grow up

Thats me on the left corner. I was always the more mature one ;)

  1. Great writers like A J Cronin and Somerset Maugham chose a wrong profession (medicine in the case of these two) initially... You are right: we can choose any career at any time.

  4. Well that is the problem all over the world.
We (including yours truly) choose pay over passion.

  5. You look like a sweet docile child in the picture.

I did my graduation in commerce and later realised that I chose wrong. I started working in operations and now I am working as a content writer. Life took me through so many different roles before I realised what I wanted :)
