Foodie Friday - The Benjo
For those of you who have never been to Indore,I am pretty sure the word 'benjo' sounds funny .I would dare not yell it in public because you know people might think I am saying something else ;)
But for the people of Indore its a street food they are very proud of. There are people who eat to live, but the people here, live to EAT (No,I am SERIOUS !)
f
Benjo is just like a vada pav,but instead of 'aloo tikki' there is an omellete inside. With loads of butter, onions and green 'chutney' it tastes divine. I never thought something with such a funny name could be so delicious. You just have to eat it to believe it.

ReplyDelete:D
DeleteAbout people from Indore living to eat...you are the fifth person I have heard this from..and am just about beginning to really believe this!
ReplyDeleteOne of my roommates in Indore, used to spend hours a lot of time decorating his plate before dinner...like onions, cucumbers, a piece of lemon one or two achars, a few different kinds of sev, and something to drink (apart from the usual dal-roti-sabji-rice) would find it way into his plate. I admit that they looked good,...but I would never have this much patience.
Oh they really do take their food very very seriously !
DeleteThey can adjust on a lot of things but never the food. Even a normal stall at a corner of town would serve you the most delicious chaat. Plus the quantity is also what bothers me,a normal person cannot really eat one full plate on his own. Still the people here manage to eat 3-4 plates at one go :D
Never the less,it is heaven for a foodie like me :)
It is something I can try making at home :) Seems a filing and delicious way to make a stomach peaceful.
ReplyDeleteYeah its actually very easy ! You just have to have a bun,an omellete and lots of butter
DeleteIts very good for breakfast, when I eat it in the morning I am done for atleast the next 4-5 hours
Hey Ritika,
DeleteGood post and literally Indore's food culture is appetite enhancer, This benjo pic seems from 56's "Johnny Hot Dog" as per my best guess.
Anyways liked your blog and specially decent design of your blog site. Its not messy and very clean.Shinchan's cover photo gives it a touch of little bit masti.Keep writing...
PS :Too Glad to find a commendable blogger from Indore.. :)
Yes you guessed it right, its Johny Hot dog's pic ! It was raining cats and dogs here so I decided to grab some of those :D
DeleteAnd thanks. My blog is pretty much like me,clear and clean and forces everyone to watch Shin Chan :D
Well,Thank God, Barsaat thami kam se kam aaj to. Best part in rainy season is anoop nagar's Mangore stalls near rajasthani restaurant.I just had plate of mangoras at anoop nagar and its too delighting as ever. If u wana taste even a better benjo, u ll find it in Anand bazar .....
DeleteYeah,I have had the ones from Anand bazaar as well, they are really yjmmy. But there is just something about Johny waala's and I think thats why he sells so much. You should have mangora's from this small stall in Kothari Market as well, they are amazing
DeleteOoooooh mama Mia - that benjo looks so yummy. I will try making this at home too. Yummmmmm :) it's bfast time here. I better get going.
ReplyDeleteNever knew that about people from indore and food. I would settle down well in such a place. Tee hee :)
Oh its a mecca for foodies! I am thinking to cover more of the local dishes from here. Ofcourse just the pictures,I dont know how to cook :P
DeleteBut do tell me how your benjo turns out and send me a picture too :)
It's true that 70s and 80s born generation of indorians like poha-jalebi,but 90s born generation love to eat benjo and bake samosa.
ReplyDeleteOfcourse no.1 spot for benjo is Johhny's benjo.Now-a-days Chaha's benjo outlet operated via van near Greater Kailash hospital, palasiya also gaining attraction through their unique gingerly-spicy taste.
I haven't had the one near Greater Kailash Hospital. I think it's time for some sunday benjo breakfast :D
